“I’m coming after you Commissioner. You’re done.” - Jim

Gotham returned last night after a six week hiatus that felt like an entire summer.

The procedural element of the show got very Criminal Minds-esque, with a serial killer kidnapping women and holding them hostage as our law enforcement buddies scrambled to catch up. And for the most part, this guy was pretty normal. Besides the fact that he was a serial killer of course…

Unfortunately, Gotham still hasn’t quite matched the pace it had going at the beginning of the season. Last night’s episode felt clunky, directionless, and a little thin. There were three plots fighting for time, and it seemed like none of them won.

Fish

FI keep trying to care about what’s going on with this Dollmaker island in the middle of nowhere, but it’s so far removed from everything and everyone else. I just can’t.

Not to mention, the news dropped during the hiatus that Jada Pinkett Smith, the actress behind Fish, will be leaving the show after Season 1 wraps. That’s right bat fans, your favorite badass gangsteress is toast. I don’t know if they’ll kill her, lock her up, or just send her away, but I’ll be sad to see Fish go. I’m even sadder that she got such a crap sideplot for her last run.

Plus, knowing she's probably going to kick the bucket makes it even harder to get invested in her story

A

"You know I really thought you were the one. But don’t worry, sooner or later I’ll find her.” – Jason

The Gilmore Girls fan in me was giddy last night, watching Milo Ventimiglia dance around Gotham in his swanky suits and slicked back hair. And then that same Gilmore Girls fan started screaming JESS PUT DOWN THE KNIFE! JESS WHY??

That’s right kiddos, The Ogre made his debut in this slightly uneven episode, and he was the best damn thing about it; even if he was murdering unsuspecting women. His plot seems like it’s going to be drawn out over the rest of the season, which is fine by me, but I still wish he’d gotten a little more focus. Milo Ventimiglia, guys. Don’t squander your star quality.

Jim

BAfter finding out that he was handed a serial killer case in the hopes that the murderer would go after his friends and family, Jim is understandably pissed. All his hard work and dedication to cleaning up the force, and this is the thanks he gets? Sheesh.

Poor Leslie might get caught in the crossfire, but if promos are any indication, it’s Barbara that The Ogre sets his sights on. Hmmm…

Bruce & Selina

A & AThe babies are back at it, on the hunt for Reggie to find out who hired him.

They find him practically with a needle still in his arm, making it pretty easy for Cat to manipulate him into giving them the truth by holding his drugs hostage. Let’s be honest here, Cat is the real Batman right now, pushing people out of windows and busting into drug houses. Bruce is kind of her Robin. Which is adorable, and thus absolutely acceptable. Carry on.

In all seriousness, that scene was such an awesome way to show the key differences in Selina and Bruce – one day Batman and Catwoman. Bruce has a code and a line he won’t cross. He tried to muster up the will to kill Reggie, but he just couldn't do it. On the other side of the fence, Selina's not an evil person, but she'll kill when it suits her. A villainess through and through.

It was cool to see hints of this reflected in their childhood, since we know exactly who they'll grow up to be.

Beasts of Prey

C+ Not exactly a powerful episode to return on, but I appreciate the effort to incorporate a long term plot. Expanding The Ogre’s story out over the last four episodes of the season proves that these writers can invest in a long-term story other than the Wayne Murder, which I appreciate.

So, A for effort, but unfortunately C+ for execution. Sorry folks.

Extra Credit

  • Aww. Little Bruce thinking a shooting gallery was a gun range. Poor naïve child.
  • Only Alfred could find a handful of blood under his shirt and respond with, “Oh dear.”
  • Jim holding up a finger and straight up silencing people is my new favorite thing.
  • No Barbara again. Does she even go here anymore?
  • That entrance though... get it Selina. Gif courtesy of Midstorm.

Demerits

  • WHAT is with all the gruesomeness lately? Scooping out eyeballs and cutting off fingers? This isn’t Saw!
  • Besides cutting off fingers, Penguin was mainly just distracting.
  • I’m ready to see Nygma go crazy already. Make it happen.
