The Night Lila Died.

It's the penultimate episode of the season and there are just as many questions as when the show premiered, if not more. We get our final "Case of the Week" and a little bit more about the night Lila died. Really, this episode is just the appetizer, getting us ready for the main course that is our season one finale.

Annalise                                                                      B-

Annalise asks Father Andrew’s would be slam piece to lie on the stand for him, telling her it’s the only way that she can save the man she loves. Doing something that might not be morally conscionable for a man you love?! No way could Annalise relate to that!

She has Nate jumped thinking it’ll get him released on bail, but really they just mess up his beautiful face and he’s put in solitary confinement. Then Annalise, Frank, and Bonnie set up the judge on the case to look like there’s a conflict of interest between her and Asher. I am 100% sure that Nate regrets the day that he got involved with Annalise. Let’s not forget that his wife has stage four terminal cancer. Either way, Father Andrew confesses to the murder of Father Bernard (it’s still illegal to kill someone, even if they’re a pedophile), so overall, not a career highlight for Annalise.

Wes                                                                             B

Ugh, Wes, you are so dumb. He steals Rebecca’s case file and goes back through what happened the night of the murder. If he doesn’t trust Rebecca because Rudy said the word “wet” once, he probably never really trusted her in the first place. The whole gang confronts her and rather than saying she’s innocent, she lets them know that she has a witness who can place them at Annalise’s house the night of the murder. Way to make friends and influence people, Rebecca! She and Wes have maybe the most destructive relationship I’ve ever seen, which means the sex must be bonkers.

Conner                                                                                    A-

Oliver asks Conner to get tested with him. “It’ll be romantic,” Oliver says. These things are never romantic, Oliver, but Conner gets at least an A- in my book because he agrees to be tested. This forces him to evaluate his sexually irresponsible actions for the man he loves, which is some true character growth from Conner. You’ve slept with a lot of people, dude! That’s totally within your right, but you don’t want to be spreading any diseases from your fictional drug addiction.

Laurel and Michaela                                                  C+

Laurel is helping Wes in this episode, which I guess is interesting. Michaela doesn’t have much to do, except tell Conner that “damn straight” she and Aidan used condoms, even when they first started dating. Michaela gets a bit more of a star turn in the season finale, but not much to do in this episode. I also love how long it took Conner and Michaela to notice that Laurel and Wes were up to something. I would not hire any of these people to be my lawyer.

The Night Lila Died                                                            B+

This episode laid a lot of the groundwork for the finale, but it was hard to keep up with the "Case of the Week" when we just wanted more about what happened the night Lila died. But that final scene where Annalise shows up at Wes’s apartment and Rebecca is tied up in the bathroom made me laugh harder than anything else on the show ever has, so it at least gets an extra few points for that.

Extra Credit

  • Asher’s seduction moves are exactly what you’d expect.
  • Frank seriously has an issue with Bonnie and Asher? Talk about pot calling the kettle black for sleeping with students.
  • Michaela finally admits she called off her wedding. Who cares?
  • Another student in Annalise's class gets a line! Welcome, Ms. Liebowitz. Tell us, who have you killed?

Demerits

  • Father Andrew is Guy from That Thing You Do! Way to take a priest and turn him into a bona fide hunk/murderer. Talk about a triple threat.
  • Delaware is really, really close to Philadelphia. I feel bad that guy lost his job, but having to travel 45 minutes to a new one isn’t that terrible of a fate.
  • What penis is pretty?” is what those girls are saying when leaving the sorority house. Not only did the show’s writers have to go to the trouble of dubbing over those extras, those are the lines they chose to use.
