Ichabod Crane with a crossbow

Sleepy Hollowcontinues to find its way in a world without Moloch, and this week, Thomas Jefferson’s hologram tried to light their path.

After some city surveyors were dragged into the depths of the tunnel system, IchAbbie raced in, crossbows bared, to save them. Instead of discovering demons, they found Jefferson’s underground library, stocked with research about the Witnesses and their mission. Forced to choose between seeing the light and saving the workmen, they chose (of course) the selfless route.

Meanwhile, Jenny discovered Irving’s evil secret, and Parrish began to woo Katrina over to the dark side.

I watched this week’s episode with my cousin and his friends - in from out of town and a captive audience - so I’ve expanded the judging panel to include their insightful comments. Let’s see what the newbies thought.

Ichabod Crane A-

“Why does that dude have a crossbow?” - Guest Judge
“He’s from Colonial times.” - Me
“You know they had guns in Colonial times, right?” - Guest Judge
“Huh?.” - Me

Sleepy Hollow IchAbbie

Crane’s historical knowledge was valuable as usual, but this week it came served with a side of chips on his shoulder. Thomas Jefferson had been his mentor, but just like a thoughtless “Instant Gram” user, TJ unfriended Crane. When they discovered his magical hologram in an underground library, TJ offered the sweet, sweet nectar of redemption. It must have been hard for Crane to turn down his help to save the kidnapped men, but he did the right thing.

With his selfless moves and ingenious use of a camera flash, Ichabod hit the bullseye this week.

Lt. Abbie Mills B+

Sleepy Hollow Abbie and the journalist

Listen, Abbie, I know you think your gut told you to trust that journalist, but your gut also told you to trust Orion and the resurrected Irving. My special lady parts gut has led me astray, too, but you might wanna start checking references.

That said, preventing freedom of the press would be especially ironic in this show, and she managed to keep the whole situation under control. She also led the charge to save the workers instead of herself, proving her good heart once again.

Thomas Jefferson C

“Wait, is this modern times?” - Guest Judge

TJ - oh, excuse me, President TJ - apparently created a holographic, magical clone of himself who lived in the library for 200 years, waiting for the crusaders to begin their quest. Why he spent a lifetime collecting research on the Witnesses and then wouldn’t even give them the Cliff’s Notes version before they destroyed it all, I will never know. Perhaps he sapped all his resolve in writing the Declaration of Independence.

Jenny Mills A-

Sleepy Hollow Jenny and Irving

Using her keen instincts, Jenny discovered that Irving wasn’t what he claimed. A tattoo revealed allegiance to the Hellfire Club, who tried to raise Moloch. Jenny kept her cool until confronting him in the evidence room, and I’m so curious to hear what she tells Abbie and Crane. I’m not sure why Jenny was tasked with protecting his wife and Macy, but I’m sure she’ll do a champion job.

Captain Irving C+

“Hey! It's the Sprite guy.” - Guest Judge

I can’t decide if I believe Irving. This whole “discovering a rune” thing seems like a stretch. How would he know what to look for? How did he get in there to steal it? How did Katrina not notice the glowing coin stuck in his palm?

If we have to say goodbye to the real Irving, I’m glad he was given the chance to save his family. Hopefully he’ll come back to us, but that ship is looking farther away by the minute.

Katrina Crane D+

“Who’s she? Is she new?” - Guest Judge
“No. Everyone hates her.” - Me

She was only on screen for 30 seconds, but Katrina managed to be both inept and compelling, which I guess is our new normal. Her finger has been pricked by Parrish’s spindle, so I suspect Katrina is about to defect.

Henry Parrish D

"Oh! It's the guy from 'Fringe!'" - Guest Judge

After a stint on the sidelines, Parrish is back in the game. In honor of Valentine’s Day, he brought his mother black roses to win her over to his cause. Who needs Moloch when you’ve got an evil genius with daddy issues?

What Lies Beneath B+

Character development is a little Jeckel and Hyde on this show - Katrina vacillates between weak and powerful, saccharine and sinister. Abraham (remember him?) has been a mindless killer and a broken-hearted softie. Now Irving is being dragged along the same path, but instead of indecision, this feels like pandering. Last week, they broke our collective hearts by making him evil, but this week he was somehow back to the good guy who fell in with the wrong crowd. Unless this is part of Parrish’s master plan, I’m not sure I buy it.

Speaking of Parrish, things are about to get interesting. Based on next week’s promo, it looks like Katrina’s 200-year longing for a relationship with her son is about to end with a flourish.

Extra Credit

  • "Oh, the crossbow is semi-automatic. That makes a difference." - Guest Judge
  • OoohhoOoOOhhh - Abbie and the journalist, sitting in a tree. Is this our new Hawley?
  • “Uncommon men prize uncommon words.”

Demerits

  • It could have been the wine, but I couldn’t understand a word Abbie’s new boyfriend said. Also, how did he get her email and phone number?
  • Seeing Thomas Jefferson greet Abbie made me a teensy uncomfortable.
