Ichabod Crane in Colonial times

Sleepy Hollow navigated its choppy second season and the finale episode brought this schooner to shore. After traveling back in time to save her partner, Abbie was saved by her Ichabod. Irving is back from the dead and back on the team. We may not know who they’ll be fighting, but their biggest battles lie ahead.

One thing we do know is that Katrina won’t be tagging along - turns out her corsets weren’t kevlar-reinforced.

As the writers begin their frantic summer-long brainstorm for viable villains, let’s see how the crew closed out season 2.

Ichabod Crane A+

“You didn’t have a choice.” - Abbie
“Yes I did. We all did.” - Ichabod

Ichabod Crane with a cell phone

This week, we got to see Ichabod in his element. Aside from being so formal with Abbie, he was the same Crane we know and love. Smart, funny, brave, and totally unimpressed by Ben Franklin’s ego.

After knowing Abbie in the past for a mere 20 minutes, he disobeyed direct orders in order to protect her, and it took him about five more minutes to believe her that his wife is an evil witch.

Back in the present day, it was only fitting that Katrina was finished by Ichabod’s hand, since he got us all into this Katrina mess. It was gratifying to see Ichabod chose his Leftenant over Katrina once and for all, and he didn’t even deny that he made the choice.

No matter what year it is, IchAbbie for the win!

Lt. Abbie Mills A+

“Now that’s true American strength.” - Abbie

IchAbbie hugs it out

After leaping back in time to save Ichabod, Abbie basically ran shit in 1781. Despite getting locked up, she was able to summon Ichabod Crane from the battlefield—saving him from the Horseman’s attack—and convince him to take her to see Benjamin Franklin. She kicked the jerky colonel’s ass to free herself from jail. Oh, and she helped reverse the Traveler’s Spell, again saving Ichabod and also the world.

Plus, she was way more of a fangirl for her own ancestor than ol’ Benji Franklin, even though he called her “The American Dream,” which shows good character.

Now that the Witnesses have been reunited in the present day and Katrina’s out of the picture (no, not THAT picture), I’m curious to see what new foes they’ll face.

Benjamin Franklin B-

Benjamin Franklin hitting on Abbie Mills

Turns out this vain, horny old bastard wasn’t very quick with the grenades. In the slice of history affected by the Traveler’s Spell, Franklin promised to be helpful to the mission until he got his head chopped off by the not-yet-Headless Horseman. It’s a good thing Abbie was able to reverse that spell - hundred dollar bills would be disturbing otherwise.

Jenny Mills N/A

Jenny was only around for a few seconds, and she missed out on getting to meet their ancestor. Though she sat the bench this week, if the show gets a third season, I suspect she’ll be a starter.

Captain Irving A-

Either he has a very believable face, or the writers were ready to be done with “evil Irving storyline.” How he managed to convince both sisters with zero evidence that he’s back on their side I’ll never know, but he pulled it off and is back on the dream team. Welcome back.

Katrina Crane C+

“It’s simple, really. I’m a witch.” - Katrina

Katrina freaks out

Well, kids, this is what it all comes down to: Katrina spent nearly two whole seasons building up to her chance to be useful, and a couple episodes into finding her power, she was taken down by a pocket knife.

Thank goodness Abbie followed Katrina into the past, because she might have given Ichabod a splinter or something. WHEW.

Good riddance, I guess. The writers did Katrina an incredible disservice and denied us Sleepy Heads a potentially worthy villain who could have redeemed all her previous idiocy. At least it seems like she’ll get to spend her afterlife with her son, and the writers have all summer to find a new baddie.

"Tempus Fugit" A

Abbie calling Ichabod Captain

The contentious second season has come to a close, and the finale episode reminded us why we should keep watching. Traveling back in time seemed to represent circling back to the beginning - allowing us to focus on the bond between the two Witnesses, Jenny, and Captain Irving. There was no "monster of the week," everyone's motivations were clear, we got to spend some time with Benjamin Franklin and Grace Dixon, and Crane's struggles with modern technology were believable again. I have no idea where they'll go with season 3, assuming they get the chance, but I'm on board. Any predictions?

Extra Credit

  • Watching Ichabod try to unlock the cell phone was the highlight of my day…
  • ...Until Abbie said she would prefer to be called Leftenant and hugged him.
  • When Franklin was listing Abbie’s attributes, I kept hearing “she’s beauty and she’s grace - she’s MISS…United States.”
  • Ichabod scolding Abbie when he thinks she’s about to drink the whiskey.
  • “Sometimes all it takes is to put pen to paper to make a difference.” - Grace Dixon

Demerits

  • Who names their kid “Jeremy” in 1781?
  • Even partnered with a demon, Katrina can’t dispatch two mortals.
  • Katrina can magically heal wounds (sort of…)…but not her own? Wolverine is not impressed.
