“Celeste forced me to make a choice between yourself and my siblings and now she means to mock that choice, taunting me with a childish game. The longer the game the more they suffer.” -Elijah

Put down the Netflix, folks! After three long weeks, The Originals is back and this week’s episode was awesome! In case you forgot, three weeks ago, Celeste and her group of witches forced Elijah to make a choice between Hayley and his siblings. Elijah chose Hayley, leaving Klaus and Rebekah at the mercy of the vengeful witches. This week the show picks up right where they left off and somewhere along the way they acquired a heavy dose of creepy, giving us an episode so beyond epic that I actually didn’t hate the fact that this was a flashback episode!
Klaus C

Elijah & Marcel A- & C

Elijah is angry this week and on the warpath. When our boy is badass, he is REALLY badass. He’s redeemed himself for his poor decision to leave his siblings high and dry for our resident damsel in distress. #sigh. This week, he and his apparent frenemy (I know they’ve alluded to not really like each other or getting along, but I’m not sure why that’s the case. Can anyone explain this to me?) Marcel team up to track down where the witches have taken Klaus and Rebekah, badly. Celeste leaves Elijah a series of clues scrawled on Elijah’s body, for no other reason than just to give us all an opportunity to see Elijah with his shirt off (not that I’m complaining). It takes the two of them all day to solve the clue, and even after they’ve decoded the last name on the list, they still couldn’t figure out what it all meant without the help of handy dandy google-ing. These boys may be hot but, damn, they’re no Sherlock Holmes are they?
Rebekah D-

Speaking of hot, loveable, but oh so dumb, our girl Rebekah had a rough week! In the last episode, Rebekah was lured into a trap by a hot guy, and now in this episode, her bane revolves around a big secret she’s been keeping that involves, yup, you guessed it, a hot guy! I’m all for romance and I get the sentiment, but Rebekah needs to STOP revolving herself around every mildly attractive male who looks in her direction. You’d think after a couple hundred years, girlfriend would have learned by now to stop thinking with the brains of a thirteen-year-old girl with raging hormones. I love Rebekah, but I think she’s brought Klaus’ wrath on herself.
Genevieve & Celeste B & F
I get why the two are pissed at Rebekah. Tuberculosis is a terrible way to die. But Celeste is still an annoying villain, and I still can’t stand her constant smirking. Genevieve on the other hand, demonstrated something in her portrayal of villainy that Celeste would never understand-range. Genevieve was able to be sinister, yet sympathetic, and damn! Gotta love that defiant look she gave to Klaus when he held the knife to her throat. I hope we get to see more of her, but enough with Celeste. Someone needs to put that woman down!
Hayley F

In an episode with way cooler things happening, I cared even less about Hayley’s cursed werewolf family plot more than ever, yet the writers still tried to slip a bit of that into this episode.
On a side note, Hayley walked into Elijah standing in the living room topless and got all hot and bothered, like she’s never seen a hot shirtless man with a firm torso before, which is odd considering she descended from a line of Abercrombie and Fitch werewolves.
"Long Way Back from Hell" A+

Tuberculosis seems to be the go to plot device for writers trying to crank up the creep factor. I can totally see why: an extremely contagious illness that brings about a slow, painful death with blood spewing up your mouth is pretty disturbing, but as a creepy plot device, it doesn’t always work. Only in this episode, it totally did! The half dead patients in the hospital room, that shot of the person bleeding to death in the bathtub and then those twins…I’m definitely sleeping with my lights on tonight. Ryan Murphy should be taking notes, because this episode certainly gave the entire season 3 of American Horror Story a run for it’s money.
Extra Credit
- Rebekah is quite possibly the worst nurse ever, which is just brilliant!
- Gotta love Klaus, even when strapped down to a chair he still tries to make a play for power by attempting to sway a new follower to his side.
- Who else is ready for the epic family fall out we’ve been promised?
Demerits
- Am I the only one who was never convinced of Marcel’s feelings for Rebekah? I always believed he was playing her, what’s with this sudden devotion in this episode?
- Did I miss something? Weren’t there three witches that attacked our vampys in the last episode? This week there are only two, did they lose one along the way?
- Looks like Sophie is really dead… for now
